Invisalign is a great choice for many patients, and caring for the aligners is an important part of treatment. In this post, our Langley orthodontists talk about how to properly clean your Invisalign clear aligners.
Cleaning Invisalign Clear Aligners
Most of the time, no one will be looking close enough to tell that you are wearing clear aligners. Their discreetness is one of many reasons why Invisalign clear aligners are becoming a popular orthodontic choice among patients.
However, your aligners become more obvious if not properly cleaned and cared for. Without daily hygiene and cleaning, your aligners can quickly become stained.
While aesthetics may be a large part of it, it's not the only reason to keep your clear aligners clean. Dirty aligner trays can result in a buildup of bacteria which can cause tooth decay.
Here, we offer some advice on keeping your Invisalign clear aligners clean.
Cleaning vs. Rinsing Invisalign Aligners
While you will be doing both during treatment, there is a difference between cleaning and rinsing your aligners. The main difference is that rinsing only clears away large debris and makes your aligners appear cleaner. This is a great option for when you've taken your aligners out to have a snack or sugary drink. Cleaning (which should be done once daily) is used to get into all the crevices and clean away plaque and debris that you can't easily see.
How often should I clean my Invisalign clear aligners?
You should clean your aligners each day. Many people find that cleaning them as part of their regular nighttime oral hygiene routine is easiest. This is a simple way to remove any food particles and bacteria that have built up during the day.
Many orthodontists also recommend cleaning your aligners anytime they appear visually dirty and rinsing them every time you need to remove them.
How to Deep Clean My Aligners
Invisalign is a popular way for people to straighten their teeth, but the aligners need regular deep cleaning methods to be effective. Caring for your aligners can help keep them clear and undetectable when worn.
Steps for cleaning your Invisalign clear aligners at home:
- Take your aligners out and give them a good rinse
- Soak them in a cleaning solution (more about those below)
- Rinse them again and use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clear away debris
- Time for a final rinse before drying them well
- Now you can pop them back in or place them in their storage case
What should I use to clean my aligners?
Here are some of the solutions that work well for safely cleaning your Invisalign clear aligners:
- Invisalign cleaning system: Invisalign offers a specially designed cleaning kit made for their aligners. It includes a tub and 50 cleaning crystals.
- Clear liquid mouthwashes (alcohol-free): One benefit of mouthwash is the lingering mint taste. A downside is that the cost can add up if your preference is an expensive brand.
- Antibacterial liquid soap: You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clear away debris and bacteria. Just dip it in the liquid antibacterial soap that has been mixed with a little cold water. Make sure to rinse them well afterward.
- Hydrogen peroxide: A solution of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water can effectively kill bacteria on your aligners. Soak your Invisalign in this mixture for about 20 minutes before rinsing well.
- Vinegar solution: Another popular option is vinegar, especially white vinegar. Much like hydrogen peroxide, you will make a solution of equal parts vinegar and warm water, then soak your Invisalign aligner for about 20 minutes.
What types of cleansers should I avoid using?
Above, we mentioned some of the cleansers that work well for clear aligners. Now we will share some that you should avoid, such as:
- Mouthwashes that contain alcohol
- Scented soaps (they can taste awful)
- Toothpaste
You should also avoid using any soaps that are coloured or dyed. These dyes can permanently stain your clear aligners.
How can I care for my Invisalign clear aligners?
Along with daily cleaning, here are some other ways that you can help keep your aligners fresh:
- Always remove your aligners when eating to avoid a buildup of food debris
- Only drink water while wearing your clear aligners. Coloured beverages can stain them.
- Avoid using hot water to clean your Invisalign clear aligners. Hot water can affect the shape of your trays.
- Store your aligners in their carrying case of an airtight container to keep them safe and free from bacteria.
