There are many different types of orthodontic treatment available today. Invisalign is a common choice for addressing misalignment discreetly. But how long does Invisalign treatment take to work? Our Langley orthodontists answer this question and more.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses clear aligner trays that are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth, applying pressure to help guide your teeth into their new positions. These aligners are designed using a 3D scanner to create digital impressions, which are then used to make clear plastic trays. You will need to wear these for 20 to 22 hours a day and switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks.
What is the Invisalign treatment process?
The first step in your Invisalign journey is to request a consultation with one of our orthodontists. We will evaluate your needs and determine if you're a good candidate for Invisalign.
Talk to Your Orthodontist
During your initial consultation, our orthodontists will assess your needs and determine if Invisalign is suitable for you. This meeting is a great opportunity to discuss your case, ask questions about costs and insurance, and address any concerns related to the treatment process.
A Customized Treatment Plan is Created for You
Your orthodontist will take X-rays, photos, and impressions of your teeth to create a digital 3D image of your mouth. This image helps your orthodontist design a personalized treatment plan, including the movement of your teeth and the estimated duration of treatment.
Receive Your Custom Aligners
A series of custom-made, clear aligners will be created specifically for you. These aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic. You'll wear them throughout the day and remove them to eat and to brush and floss your teeth.
Because they're made of clear plastic, making them appear nearly invisible when worn, you'll find that many people might not even notice you're wearing them. This allows you to achieve your new, healthy-looking smile – discreetly.
Change to New Aligners Every Two Weeks
Every two weeks or so, you will change to a new set of aligners and advance to the next stage of your treatment. Each tray is designed to move your teeth to a new position gradually while providing adequate time for the hard and soft tissue to adjust to the new position of your teeth. You will also attend occasional checkups with your orthodontist to monitor your progress about every six weeks or so.
Ongoing Care Once Treatment is Complete
Once you have finished your orthodontic treatment, you will likely need to wear a retainer. This appliance will help maintain your teeth in their new positions. Your orthodontist will discuss your options and provide a detailed plan for wearing your new retainer.
You may also have follow-up appointments after finishing your Invisalign treatment. These visits will enable your orthodontist to monitor the results and address any potential issues that may arise.
How long is Invisalign treatment?
Your orthodontist will need to evaluate your needs and the current condition of your oral health to determine how long your Invisalign treatment will take. After your initial appointment, your orthodontist should be able to provide an estimate of the treatment duration. Typically, most patients use between 12 and 48 sets of aligners during their treatment.
What factors affect the Invisalign treatment timeline?
Each orthodontic treatment varies in duration depending on individual cases. Here are several factors that can influence how long your treatment will take:
Complexity of the Orthodontic Issues
Complex cases involving significant misalignments may require more time to treat.
Your Age
Typically, younger patients undergo tooth movement more quickly than adults. This is because the bones are still forming, making them more pliable and allowing for easier movement.
Compliance With Wearing the Aligners
To achieve the desired results in the expected timeframe, it’s essential to wear your aligners for the full duration recommended by your orthodontist. Committing to this will help ensure your treatment stays on schedule and that you achieve optimal results.
Frequency of Aligner Changes
You should change your aligners every few weeks. Some cases may require more frequent aligner changes, while others may need longer intervals between sets of aligners. It's important to follow the plan laid out by your orthodontist.
Attending Follow-Up Appointments
Attending all follow-up appointments is essential for your orthodontic treatment. This is the only way your orthodontist can make necessary adjustments and keep your treatment on track.
Additional Treatments
Supplemental treatments like attachments or elastics may require more time during treatment. These are designed to help you achieve ideal results.
Oral Hygiene
Proper oral hygiene is crucial for dental health. Neglecting it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, which can negatively impact the progress of orthodontic treatment.
What is the difference between Invisalign and braces?
Invisalign uses clear, removable trays to gradually shift your teeth into position, while traditional braces consist of a metal archwire held in place by small brackets attached to each tooth. These components work together, often with additional elements like elastic bands, to apply pressure and guide the teeth into their designated positions. Unlike Invisalign, braces are a permanent fixture during treatment and cannot be removed temporarily.
Since traditional braces cannot be removed, you must be careful about the foods you eat to prevent accidental damage. This means avoiding very hard or sticky foods. However, you won’t have to worry about staying on track with your treatment, as the appliance will always be attached to your teeth. Invisalign can be removed while eating your favourite foods, but you must remember to put them back in, as it's important to wear them for 20 to 22 hours each day.
Both of these treatment options are designed to straighten your teeth, helping you achieve a healthy-looking smile. Your orthodontist can help you decide which option is ideal to help you achieve your desired outcome.
